We are now on our way toward the final project, and here’s my reflection on the process so far!
Oct 29, 2024The midterm presentation is a checkpoint after our 5 in 5 project, where we use insights observed from rapid prototyping to capture and build upon the creative insights that emerged, developing a more comprehensive design proposal. From the 5 in 5 project, I chose the toilet as an interactive space prototype and further developed it into an interactive design piece I hope to present at the final.
In the experience of conceptualizing and designing this toilet project, I really enjoyed the research process. I explored numerous books and films on public restrooms as references, and reading these materials opened up many new perspectives that I hadn’t previously considered. For example, from Erving Goffman’s viewpoint, I began to think about how the restroom functions as the ultimate "backstage" of life. I also encountered unavoidable discussions of gender issues related to restrooms and considered how restroom experiences and scenarios differ for the elderly and young children. This exploration led me to uncover many intriguing contrasting concepts within the restroom setting, enriching my conceptual thinking.
At the same time, I find the challenging aspects of this project closely tied to my direction moving forward. Currently, the interactions in my restroom project are analog, based on paper and pen, but I would like to explore the possibility of translating this content into a digital format. However, every time I consider this, I feel stuck at different points. On one hand, I question whether transitioning to a digital format is truly necessary. On the other hand, I wonder if replacing paper with a screen or a small game on a phone would compromise the original essence of the experience. This uncertainty keeps me from taking the next step.
In the midterm critique, the points raised by Kyle and Aya left the strongest impression on me:
These questions prompted me to rethink the goals of this project and the emotional impact I hope to create for the public. Perhaps what truly interests me is not the act of using the restroom itself, but rather the unique nature of the restroom as a private yet public space. I'm fascinated by how, within this private setting, we might foster dialogue between strangers.
For the upcoming weeks, here is my work plan. I plan to first clarify the project goals and revise the design questions this week. I hope to gather more relevant case studies about restrooms or private spaces and finish reading the book Toilet. Once I have clarified my direction, I will further plan the detailed timeline for my work.
